POSSIBLE ALIEN SIGNALS!!!
Sept. 2, 2004 — An enigmatic radio signal picked up three times from the same area of the sky is a candidate for a call from intelligent alien life, according to New Scientist magazine.
The magazine reports in its Saturday edition that the SETI Institute has detected the radio signal on three separate occasions with the Arecibo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico.
The SETI@home project has been harnessing the computing power of millions of personal computers voluntarily left on to search the skies for ET for nearly six years.

The very weak signal, called SHGb02+14a, emits from between the constellations Pisces and Aries. There is no obvious star or planetary system within 1,000 light years, according to the article.
Dan Werthimer, a radio astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) and the chief scientist for SETI@home, told the magazine the scientists weren't getting to excited, but were continuing to observe the signal.
SHGb02+14a has a frequency of around 1420 megahertz, a frequency that some argue would be one that extraterrestrials would use, since it is one of the main frequencies at which hydrogen absorbs and radiates energy, New Scientist reports.

Is ET calling from home? Astronomers hunting for alien signals in space have said they have found their best candidate yet for contact by intelligent extraterrestrial life: radio signals from the darkness between the constellations of Pisces and Aries, a 1000 light years away.
The New Scientist says the signal, named SHGb02+141, is "an enigma". It was picked up by the six-year-old SETI@home project which analyses radio signals from space.
In February 2003, the giant radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, scanned 200 sections of the sky which had each sent out at least two unexplained radio signals. By last month, all of these had either disappeared or been explained away. Except one.
SHGb02+141 is coming from a part of space where there is no obvious star or planetary system. Its frequency is 1,420 megahertz, one of the main frequencies of hydrogen when it absorbs and emits energy. Some space scientists have argued that an alien civilization trying to broadcast its presence would transmit at this frequency. "It just boggles my mind," said University of California Berkeley's Eric Korpela.
