i have a story with reference and can be verified by other men outside me if they can be located. one being Jack Meyer of chicago. and Ronald Poore of Michigan. i have not had contact with these gentlemen in over the last 15 years. i am sure they will remember me and this strange story.
at the time it occured it was to my best estimate june of 1987. we were in the airforce at that time working on radar equipment at a bombing training range 45 miles north of havre, montana. we provided scoring and electronic simulation of weapon systems similar to the solviets border weapon systems. it was our job to attempt to shoot down our own aircraft electronically and measure the delay in response of the bomber/fighter crew as well as plot the aircrafts flight pattern to target, point of release, and point of impact. these were simulated and no live ordinance was ever used. this is the current job of the 1st CEVG in the airforce. we had a couple mobile radar sets that were permanently affixed to a building we refered to as tech ops. an AMLQT4 ground jammer, an ANMPS9, and an AMLQT4. the radar sets were powered by line voltage off the power pole like your basic large corporation building with a large step down transformer on the ground. the power was extrememly clean as this was very important to accuracy of the systems. we all worked the maintenace shift, hell back then i was 20 or 21 as all of us were. our supervisors 4 years older at best untill you got into the older ranking men. we calibrated this equipment continually in training. repaired it to component level. if it was broken we fixed it. all of us had a deep understanding of electronic repair and theory of operation. we had too. this equipment went down occasionally as everything electromechanical does. we played around with settings and practiced scanning for aircraft and locking on to them with the systems and tracking them to the limits of the equipment. one of the settings that we didn't use often was called sector scanning. you can point the antenea in a direction and adjust it to scan a specified azimuth. this was used to automatically detect aircraft and lock onto it without any use of man power. also attatched to the equipment was a seperate iff/sif radar that triggers the transponder of an aircraft to flash its wing number to the men in the radar set. it gives a seperate radar track indicator to the operator that provides range and azimuth. so basically, each radar set mentioned above has 2 operating systems at the same time. please note i did not mention elevation, yet. ......back to my story so we were given this million dollar high end technolgy and had free wielding of it. we would capture an aircraft flying by and direct the other radar set to aquire it. we did this routinely for practice. we had to we had to facilitate an enemy to our own forces and provide a threat. one afternoon i had the radar set set up in sector scan and was talking to jack on the mic proly about drinking beer or what happened a few nights before when my radar set shot straight up in the air and gave me a near 88 degree elevation with a range of 200 kyds. my iff/sif flashed bright right over center of the indicator. there was no transpondance. then at 80kyds right above above the radar set, the aquired target shot south and spun my antenea around following it it exitted my screen in 3 seconds, covering appoximately 320 miles. my elevation at that time was around 10 degrees. Normally i would have thought it to be a system glitch or something failed in the equipment but jack stated, "Did you see that?" "wtf was that?" over the next 3 years it happened 2 other times i can recall with different headings. the other fact of the matter is, the system didn't malfunction like that ever in the 3 years i operated and maintained it. i lived in montana another 14 years in that time i witnessed something fall from the sky bright white and strike on the other side of the mountain i lived on. there was a loud explosion and i felt a tremble of earth. the sky and the ridge of the mountain lit up bright white like that of an arc welder. the sound was 10 times louder than a railroad train coupling at a distance. i almost thought it was lightening but i remembered seeing how clear the sky was. if you have ever been to montana you know what i am talking about. the radio station said it was a meteor strike but that it hadn't been located. i went to the otherside of the mountain that afternoon on mountain 1 and to the top of Baldy Butte. i saw absolutely nothing that would resemble any meteor strike. there is a view of nearly 5o miles from that point in the Bear Paw Mountain range, i would also like to say it was extremely dry at that time of year and a brush fire would have started with a kids cap gun. nothing else was ever stated by the media. there are anumber of seizmic recording devices along the roads in that area and i was alwas currious what showed up. but like most other things i can't explain, i let it go. no sense troubling an imaginative mind. currently i live in cincinnati ohio. most mornings at 3 am you can see metiors fall from the sky if you are south like in walton kentucky, but nothing like montana.
